The Danger of ‘input’ focussed productivity

Not all tasks are created equal.

Capture everything is the mantra of some of the most successful productivity systems out there today. But, there is a huge risk in adopting this approach in the wrong way.

New tasks are inputs. Inputs can come from anywhere or from anyone. They can relate to anything. The ‘Capure Everything approach’ advocates indiscriminately writing things down. This is very dangerous if you don’t get the next step right.

Input focussed productivty leads to high stress and overwhelm.

Once upon a time I discovered GTD, and capture everything is one of the core components of this system. If you build a second brain, capture is where the process begins. Even Carl Pullein’s basic COD system, begins with Capture/Collect.

Not all tasks are created equal. The danger of some of these systems is these tasks, indiscriminately capture, then also get indiscriminately organised into your system and scheduled.

Now, there is step in the process designed to deal with this and I will mention that shortly. But, I’ve realised that my ‘productivity brain’ has been wired to focuss on my inputs. The approach of these systems becomes focussed on inputs and not on outputs.
