Minimalism and Keeping things simple - App edition.

Do you want to keep track of your tasks? There's an app for that! Need to manage your time? There's an app for that? Like the Eisenhower method? Yet again, there's an app for it. Are you a fan of the Pomodoro Technique? You bet there's an app for that too.

And not just one app. Hundreds.

The point of this post is that we engage in app minimalism and keep things simple. Some years back, Carl Pullein talked about his 'project one'. The idea was that whatever he needed, he only needed one of them. Applied to apps, he would use one calendar, one notes app etc etc. The idea is fantastic. To many of us fill up our hard drive and app drawers with too many apps that are far to similar and fulfil functions that other apps we use could easily do as well.

Let's take an example of the Pomodoro technique. If you utilise this method, there are hundreds, if not thousands of app that you can download that are dedicated to this. Some of them even cost a fair penny! You'll also find this feature built into to a number of other types of apps as well. If you use Tick Tick as your task manager, there's a pomodoro timer in there. If you track your time with Toggl, it's got one too. The dedicated pomodoro apps all come with a whole host of features, over and above the simple timer. You can build a forest with one popular app, create a thriving animal ecosystem in another. And so ,any of these enable you to track various things in various ways. I'm sure some of this is useful for some.
