How to Plan an Effective 2024

In truth I would have started planning 2024 a couple of months ago. The reality of life meant that as I was new in my job I wasn’t in a position to have any clear thinking on my priorities for 2024 needed to be here. But, I am kicking off the planning process for 2024 right now and I thought I would write about this as I think about how to plan an effective 2024.

There are quite a few stages to this process and exactly how I do it differs a bit each year. This is where instinct comes in. When it comes to daily and weekly planning, I follow a checklist. The further out I am looking, the more intuitive I allow things to be. Also, the more relaxed you can afford to be. I am a great believer in being in a good place to start as you mean to go on, so I would always advocate for completing your annual planning by December 31st (or whenever your planning year ends). However, if you miss that date, it’s not game over. Far from it.

How do you start planning a year?

A lot of people will say that the best place to start is to review the year that you are completing. There are numerous ideas, blog posts, YouTube videos and Notion Templates telling you exactly how to do this. Reflecting on the past is not, in my view, a good place to start.
